Below is the preliminary schedule for the 10th Annual ASG Songwriter Symposium 2014, presented by the Texas Songwriters Association. While we believe the schedule to be virtually a lock as presented below, there are still a few late breaking details and other contingencies that could slightly alter the schedule below. Please refer to the program schedule you will receive at Registration for any updates to the online schedule. We look forward to seeing you all real soon and sharing this experience with you.

Hosted by ASG Executive Director, Lee Duffy, this is a time to come and hear about the different tracks that are offered to you at this conference. We will go over the schedule together to tell you about the instructor, talk about the class in more detail, introduce you to the instructors that are on site and answer any questions you might have to help you better choose your path for the weekend. This will also be a meet and greet and used as a time for those that have attended the conference before to give any insight that they might have discovered in conferences past to help you get the most from this conference.

This is an introduction to the publishers. They will tell you a little about themselves, and some of the things they are currently working on. This session will end with a Q & A. The age old dilemma of how to build and audience of consumers for your work. Part II of the Business of Music Workshop Series is designed to give the independent artist a deeper understanding of the market landscape for music and how to implement a plan that effectively reaches their targeted audience of consumers.

Learn the Art of Free Writing – (Sycamore Room)
Hit songwriter, Austin Cunningham leads a workshop in learning strategies on how to take an idea and “freely” write words and feelings around that idea without stopping. Then, learning to recognize the power words and phrases that the “free writing” reveals, and how to use them to craft your song.

Guitar For The Songwriter with Marvin Dykhuis – (Oak Room)
Ace guitarist, songwriter and producer Marvin Dykhuis facilitates this workshop for songwriters who write and perform with guitar. Marvin explores techniques to enhance solo performance, including runs, scales, licks and double stops that will work with chord changes and melodic phrases. These techniques are also invaluable in the songwriting process, especially when building effective melodies. Bring a tuned guitar and something to write down your notes, because you are definitely going to take notes, so you can remember later. This class is geared to intermediate to advanced players, but everyone is welcome.

Chuck Cannon and Shari Smith lead this innovative workshop that explores the connections between literary writing and songwriting and the strategies that create effective story telling.

Getting Ready for the Studio – (Oak Room)
Veteran producers Stephen Doster & Marvin Dykhuis facilitate this workshop on the pre-production process and how to get the most out of your studio time through effective pre-production. Topics that will be explored include choosing a producer, deciding on which songs to record, choosing your supporting musicians, scheduling your studio and post-production time, planning your budget and much more. If you expect to record an album in the next year or so, this workshop is invaluable.

If you have ever seen Chuck Cannon perform, then you know he writes some of the coolest songs ever written and that he also employs some of the most dynamic and creative guitar tunings known to man. In this workshop for guitar players, Chuck will explore the “secrets” behind alternate tunings and the ways to use them to power boost your songwriting and performances.

Join songwriter and performance coach Debby Throckmorton as she facilitates this workshop designed to help you find the confidence to become the center of your own stage, no matter the size of the venue or the audience. Learning to focus on command, especially during a performance when potential distractions are all around you, is the difference between a so-so show and a masterful performance.
